Go Green with eco-friendly Segways at Sentosa
Updated Singapore MediaCrop Radio 938 Live: 4th January 2009 - Thinking of an alternative mode of transport, that is fun yet environment-friendly?
Visitors to Sentosa island can now experience that with the personal transporter called a Segway.Using in-built computers and high-tech gyroscopes, the two-wheel mobile device allows users a safe and convenient travelling experience through guided eco-tours.
Shereena Sajeed finds out more about the Segway Go Green initiative at Sentosa.
The Segway Human transporter, introduced last month, runs on batteries and can travel up to a maximum of 20 kilometres per hour. It's a smart electric device that relies on sophisticated technology to ensure the user is kept balanced at all times.By leaning your weight forward or backward, the Segway senses your body movements and automatically adjusts its speed.Managing Director of Segway Sentosa, Tom Navasero elaborates on the safety aspect of the device.
"It's totally safe, we've got kids on it, as long as we are trained properly, the system is safe. It's similar to bicycles but we have to respect also pedestrians, road signs and the traffic to be safe. But they are quite safe, they are self-balancing."
The Segway Go Green initiative is all about creating a sustainable mobility solution and is in line with the aim of reducing global carbon emissions.Currently, the Segway Sentosa headquarters is situated at one of the main hubs on the island where the monorail, buses, taxi stands and carpark converges.
"From here they can then transfer to an electric vehicle either a Segway or a solar shuttle to go around Sentosa. Also around Sentosa, we're setting up pods. Pods are smaller hubs where there will be electric vehicles like the Segways located where a resident, employee or visitor can go and swipe, hopefully their NETS card to grab a Segway or an electric vehicle to then commute within the five to 25 mile radius."
Mr Tom hopes that with the Integrated Resort on Sentosa scheduled to open next year, these electric vehicles will help ease the traffic within the area.
"We definitely have to help them, there'll be alot of cars coming into the casino, into the hotels, so our goal here is to replace that. When they get into the island, hopefully around the island, they don't drive, they ride an electric vehicle that we provide."
According to Segway Singapore, response to the transportation device has been positive.Guided eco adventure tours, priced at SGD $35 for half an hour ride, are available around Sentosa island throughout the week.
Segway Offers Green Transportation Alternative to Officials of the Beijing 2008 Olympics
BEDFORD, NH – August 4, 2008 – This week 500,000 visitors and 10,500 athletes will descend on Beijing, China for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. While there, visitors will benefit from the added security of officers and delegates using Segway® Personal Transporters (PTs) for crowd and event management and security. By using the zero-emmissions Segway PTs, Chinese and Olympic officials are taking a major step in their effort to “go green” for this year’s historic event.
The 2008 Olympic Games has adopted an environmentally friendly green strategy focused on energy efficiency and green energy appliance use at buildings and sports venues. The zero-emissions Segway PT was chosen as the ideal green transportation solution for stadium and event hall management, community policing, arena logistics, airport security, personnel transportation, and for the highly visible Olympic Ambassadors. More than 100 units will be seen all across the city – from the Beijing International Airport to the new Beijing National “Bird’s Nest” Stadium – before, during, and after the events.
“We are pleased that the Segway PT was chosen to be part of China’s green initiative to build a more environmentally friendly city and Olympic Village,” commented Jim Norrod, CEO of Segway, Inc. “As a natural extension of our commercial business, using international ambassadors and officers to spread goodwill and keep the visitors and athletes safe is a wonderful application of our transportation technology and we are happy to be a part of this historic event.”
Because of the high-profile nature of the Olympic Games, police and security agencies in Beijing have committed to employ the latest technology to ensure the security and safety of those attending the events. Moreover, because of the demands that these large-scale events place on personnel, police agencies need specialized equipment and tools to make each of their officers more productive and efficient. Ambassadors and officers find Segway PTs extremely useful for the Olympic Games because they are raised eight inches taller on these units, enabling the rider to have ideal sight lines over people and automobiles. Also, because the Segway PTs are self-balancing and have a zero-turn radius, the rider can move through crowds much more easily than they could in a patrol car, or on a bike or motorcycle, and much faster and without fatigue than on foot. The Segway PTs will also enable personnel to respond quickly if an emergency were to occur.
